Star Wars The Force Awakens a review

Jar Jar Binks. Midi-chlorians. Pod Racing. Anakin Skywalker as an annoying kid. “I don’t like Sand.” Anakin Skywalker as an annoying adult. A bad love story. Hayden Christensen appearing in Return of the Jedi. “From my point of view, the Jedi are evil.” Darth Vader yelling “No.”.  Green screen backgrounds that look fake.

Yes, after the initial run of trilogy from George Lucas’ groundbreaking, industry changing Star Wars, came the rerelease of the prequels, an almost universally hated trilogy of films Star Wars fans complain about to this day. Many fans turned on George Lucas, saying he had been corrupted by his greed and sullied the good name of Star Wars with constant merchandising.

But then, a New Hope came on the horizon (See what I did there?). Lucas sold the film rights to the all-powerful Disney Corporation for a billion dollars as Disney announced a new trilogy to be sequels of the original. Fans rejoiced, hearing that Star Wars would be out of the hands of George Lucas and be allowed to breathe life of their own without all the bits that didn’t work last time.

However, not everyone was impressed. With the announcement of Cloverfield’s and Star Trek’s J.J. Abrams as director, many ‘geek’ film critics cried foul, thinking Abrams wouldn’t be up to the task and his storytelling sensibilities would be a good fit to Star Wars, while others thought he would do a good job.

Are the fears unfounded? Is Abrams up to the job? Can Disney bring what made the original trilogy so great back?

Ladies and Gentlemen, Jedi and Sith, this is a review of the Disney owned, J.J. Abrams directed “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens”.

The Force Awakens is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, where the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire have become the Resistance and the First Order, respectively, and follows new leads Finn, Rey, and Poe Dameron alongside characters returning from previous Star Wars films

Fanboys, Fangirls, rest assured, the Force Awakens is a good film. Is it great? I can’t say for sure, but it is a lot of fun and given the slog “The Phantom Menace” “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith” were, it’s enjoyable enough to forget all those films.

The story follows Finn, a Stormtrooper growing a conscience, Rey, a young girl on a desert planet trying to survive and BB-8, a droid carrying important information for the Resistance in an effort to defeat the First Order.

The film itself is pretty much a call-back to the original film, A New Hope, as it places scenes meant to cater to the fans. There’s the Cantina scene, the Desert and Snow planet, the underdog Alliance trying to take down a super-weapon, etc. As for the J.J. Abrams mystery box, it’s oddly missing. Many of the big ‘twists’ (which I won’t spoil) are answered very early on and it deals with the new and returning cast having to deal with those revelations.

The visuals and score are wonderful and astounding. J.J. Abrams is able to edit coherently enough so we can see everything on screen. (Though one can’t help but notice Abrams signature lens flare is brought to full effect here. When did the Sith learn that trick?)

The new cast is great. Finn is both humorous and humane in his arc to redeem himself. BB-8, is fun to watch with his ball design and Rey seems to be set to inspire a whole new generation of young girls and women with her attempting to make sense of the situation. (Though I imagine certain critics will claim Rey is a Mary Sue/Author Insert as she is not only a skilled mechanic, an instant favorite of Han Solo but, yes, Force-Sensitive).

I don’t know if “The Force Awakens” is good on its own merits or if it is just expensive fanfiction meant to cater to the disgruntled fanboys who were disappointed by the Star Wars prequels, but I, personally, enjoyed the hell out of it. I suspect you will too.

Verdict: Full Price! (3D was good too!)

The Empire Strikes Back > A New Hope > The Force Awakens > Return of the Jedi > Revenge of the Sith > Attack of the Clones = The Phantom Menace, if you must know.
